Wiz + Curren$y’s How Fly collab project made me believe in mixtapes
In 2008 I was a freshman at Northeastern Illinois University. I attended Carthage in Kenosha initially, hoping to major in social work. I despised Carthage; the choice to go there was heavily influenced by my guidance counselor from my snobby, upper class, private high school. I wanted diversity and I wanted a school I could…

Freako – See (Video)
Chicago’s own Freako is known for his trippy music; case in point his project Below Average. BA was consistently odd, inventive and wonderful. After the success of the tape, Freako dropped off a few more singles including See. Like many of his tracks, this one has a stutter speed beat containing a lot of wordplay. He decided to…

Towkio feat. Joey Purp – Playin Fair (Video)
Towkio’s Community Service 2 was very different from last years .Wav Theory. I think we can all agree on that. But Playin Fair (along with Tear Drop) had a similar sound to what we loved on his breakthrough mixtape. If you enjoyed Community Service 2 more than, well, more power to you. I have replayed .Wav…

TUT + Isaiah Rashad – G35 (New Track)
Well this is a treat. Coming off the success of 2015’s Preacher’s Son album, TUT drops G35 with previously quiet Isaiah Rashad. Quotes – Suburban Kid McFly (New Track)
My first submission is a feel good track, and that’s exactly how I wanted to start off these posts. I just received this in my inbox, literally 15 minutes ago. Quotes is 1/2 of Chicago group Retrospect (who also includes Def Poet) but has officially ventured into solo territory. Today he let loose the third…

Ikon + Femdot – 3ft No Pressure (New Track)
How does Femdot top his incredible 2016 run? Collaborating with producer Ikon (who produced one of my top ten most played tracks of 2015) and dropping 3ft No Pressure premiered on Allhiphop.com. EP thr(we) and recently dropped fo(u)r placed femdot as one of the most talented artists coming out of Chicago. I also really enjoyed…

Kamaiyah – How Do You Want It (Video)
In a recent Forbes magazine interview Kamaiyah told the publication she had absolutely no promotion for breakout video How Does It Feel. It garnered attention immediately back in October when it was released, and fans were eagerly anticipating a full length debut. They got just that this March with A Good Night In The Ghetto.…

Gucci Mane – Gucci Please (Official Music Video)
Another day, another Gucci Mane visual. This time it’s in the form of Gucci Please off his critically acclaimed and more sober album Everybody Looking. The video is very different from his previous drops as this one shows footage from his first concert since his release from prison: Gucci Mane & Friends. This is one of my…
