It’s been a minute since I’ve heard from Philly’s Shon Goner. I’ve always been impressed with his music, and even reached out to him last November for a dissection interview (peep here.)
He’s told me that a full length was in the works, and I’m honestly surprised it took him this long to drop it. Surprised, but not disappointed – as this is everything I wanted from him…and more. Shon isn’t a trendy MC – he raises the bar of what it means to be a rapper – best expressed on On The 7th Day. The project has been in the works for 2 years, and focuses on his development as an artist in that short period of time. Going further – It’s title stems from the belief that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh.
Sonically – it’s innovative, refreshing, and the essence of who Shon is. I’ll admit, the use of autotune in rap is KILLING me, and although Shon uses it – he doesn’t rely on it. My instant favorite, Salty, is a club ready, r&b centric banger that is as much catchy as it is innovative. Another stand out is Gospel – an expression of Shon’s anxieties and fears.
On The 7th Day is Shon’s journey as an artist and human being – and we are lucky enough to experience it with him. Anyone can share their trials and tribulations, but Shon does it with flair. He can craft hit records…or bar heavy reflections. I HIGHLY recommend you add the project to your Spotify or Apple Music. Support hard-working artists.
