There are so many dope independent rappers nestled in the heart of Chicago. These MC’s can put out amazing music, but it often falls by the wayside, sinking into the black hole of the SoundCloud universe. One of the best projects I’ve heard all year has a similar story.

Chicago talent doola just dropped his Meanwhile EP, and after immersing myself in his hypnotic flow, ice-cold beats, and unique storytelling, I took a few minutes to come back to reality. I questioned myself, my art, my writing, and my attitude towards life.

Meanwhile is a study on doola –  and if you don’t pay attention to his every word, you’ll miss his sadness, what he’s truly been through, and the juxtaposition of its beauty. doola is imperfectly perfect.

The production (by fkj & timeless) is extraordinary, and just as important as doola’s approach to his music. nochilliams also laced two tracks with an equally impressive display of eclectic lyricism and true talent. Don’t be fooled by the album art, this is hip hop at its VERY finest.
