The Village has been on my radar for almost a year now. The Philly duo of Dizzy & Maye have always reminded me of that early 2000’s hip hop era – when the likes of Aesop Rock, Dilla, and MF Doom were at their peak. I’ve noted before that they choose excellent instrumentals to rhyme over, utilizing soul, free form jazz, and the classic underground. They also kill it on the mic.

An unreleased Village gem just hit my inbox, and I’m grateful it’s finally out. Cold World  uses another choice instrumental, courtesy of Khris Kurse who keeps it light and dusty. The Village utilizes narratives & storytelling to lament about money being the root of all evil. As 2017 leads to 2018, artists will continue to make music for all the wrong reasons. Dizzy & Maye do it for the culture – and it’s evident in their music. Having this mentality can also bring pain, darkness, and a lack of motivation.
