I had the pleasure of watching easily one of my favorite Chicago MC’s perform last night at the Illinoize show. This was the first time I saw Joel Q live which was special for me as I’ve been admiring and writing about his music for quite some time. He is low-key yet captivating on stage – his bars flow effortlessly and I focused on him and only him throughout his performance. Lucky enough for me he performed Daniel, his most honest, heartbreaking, yet encouraging song on his discography.
He submitted the official video just a few days ago and I’ve just now peeped it. It brought new meaning into the track. There are no bells and whistles on the Dinero Films visual, and there shouldn’t be. It’s focused on Joel – recording, linking with his homies, and spitting reflective rhymes. The track is a true hip hop record, you have to pay attention to truly feel it. Production by Brotha-Gif added much to the song, providing an impressive, but subtle backdrop for Joel to speak his truth.
Joel dropped this on his birthday (September 16th) so if you haven’t already wish him a happy birthday. He has another performance in October…peep the flyer below for more info.
