We’ve been blessed to know so many incredible female artists from the inception of flowsfordays. Hip hop + r&b, as a genre, is male dominated, but as the industry has grown women are finally getting the spotlight they deserve. We aim to continue that trend.
Multi faceted artist Destiny Roberts has made this pretty easy. The Saint Paul emcee/songstress is an artist on independent label 3me, which has given her the platform she deserves. Her single Free Your Mind impacted a month ago and has hit tons of blogs throughout the U.S. This was our introduction to her music and it blew us away.
She recently dropped the official music video to the song, which depicts a day in the life of an artist that truly loves making music. We’ve been in touch with her for awhile now and are so excited to share our conversation. One thing is for sure…we believe in her.
Hey Destiny! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us! You caught our attention when you dropped Free Your Mind a few weeks ago. What has the response been like on that one?
Free Your Mind has gotten a lot of positive feedback after the release. Within a few days, the song floated in a few blogs and post of local media platforms. It’s def not where I want it to be yet, but so far the response has been great. I’m glad to put out positive music.
You also produced it. How long have you been producing?
I’ve been producing and recording music since I was 10 years old.
Your most recent project, “Just A Reminder” was just excellent. Why did you give it that title?
Just a Reminder was my 3rd project I dropped to the world. It’s called that because each song on the project are little reminders to people that play a big role in their lives. I’m reminding people about the importance of their self worth/ love, that they’re beautiful just the way they are, along with other uplifting messages.
You’ve got a ton of producers on the EP including NicG, D’Artizt and 0m3ga. How do you know them? What type of production draws you in?
I actually don’t know any of those producers, I found their music online. I just fell in love with those certain songs that are on my last project.
You are apart of indie label 3me. How did you link up with them?
I joined 3ME early this year in Feb. Originally, I first met their creative director, Brian Few, at a music video that he was shooting and I was apart of. We linked up the next week so he could check out my music and he loved it enough to push me to get on the team and everything just fell in place from there. Brian is also my boyfriend now and shoots all of my music videos.
Who are some of your biggest supporters?
My biggest supporters are my family, my team (3me) and my fans.
Good Vibes was your debut album (at least on SoundCloud.) How would you compare it to just a reminder?
Good Vibes Was my second project dropped to the world. In a sense, one thing that “Good Vibes” & “Just a Reminder” has in common is the motive behind the project. I created Good Vibes because I wanted to put out good music that was powerful and uplifting. “Just a Reminder” was created to put out music that was uplifting and a reminder for people to realize their worth and value.
What mindset where you in when you recorded Good Vibes?
I was in such a good space mentally creating Good Vibes. Well, even if i wasn’t, The process of creating the project brought me back to a place of peace.
You create such positive and uplifting music which is what initially drew me to Free Your Mind. Is it easy to make that type of music? Would you call yourself a positive person?
I’m definitely a very positive person. That comes out a lot in my music. I just believe in spreading love, light and positive vibes in a world that can feel very dark at times. Music is just one of the ways I spread positivity, it’s a beautiful thing.
The covers of your two albums are so dope. Who designed them?
I designed both of the covers, I actually did the Good Vibes cover off my phone. My boyfriend brought the Just a Reminder cover to life with his graphic design skills
When I saw that article from GoMN, I was actually surprised. I had no clue that i was going to be apart of that post. It felt good to see though, it always feels good when you are being recognized for what you do, in a way, it’s affirming, but this is just the beginning. I’m excited for what God has in store.
What are you plans for the rest of the year?
My plans for the rest of the year is to finish off with a few more shows, get ready for my next album release as well as create more visuals
Any new music on the horizon?
I def have new music coming! I will be releasing my next album either in Jan or Feb.
Destiny has a show on January 7th at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. If you are in the area come on out. Purchase tickets here.
