Astonish – To Whom It May Concern (New Project + Review)

We were dazzled when Chicago rapper Astonish gave us My Theme Song with Mano, so of course tabs were kept on his upcoming LP To Whom It May Concern.

Well, it dropped, and it did not disappoint. There is a song for everyone here whether you want to hear some conscious lyrics, emotional and uplifting tracks, or narrative pieces.

Astonish has a wide range of talents. Just listen to Get Away. It’s an intoxicating and dreamy track with Astonish dazing in and out of smooth rhymes and then half sinking vocals. This is a stark contrast from We Got Now where Astonish not only executes a catchy chorus but spills intense bars over a bass rattling beat.

He can do the collaboration tip really well too like with Triple Beam (with Chris Crack.) They trade bars over elegant production reminiscent of vintage Big K.R.I.T. mixtapes. We Did It with JusQ is just as fresh, but the vibe is more relaxed and warm.

The strongest song on here is Astonish’s second track with JusQ, Peace. It is perfect riding music. This can be played in any type of weather. It’ll match snowy nights, fall mornings and even out till next year when things get warmer. JusQ provides show stopping verses that he easily glides over.

To Whom It May Concern is more than an expressive piece, it’s hip hop at its best and most diverse.
